Every Day 05:03
Every Day Words and music by G. Hoskins Well, the spirits moved his feet To the music that they played And they wouldn't let him hear it And they wouldn't let him stray From the path they set before him, From the set list that they made It would confuse him if he knew it, They could use him more this way And he said, "How...did I get this way?" Well, the angels really loved him, The devils loved him, too. On a slow night he was lots of fun, He wasn't Job but he would do And they loved how he was empty, And the shapes he'd bend in to And how beautifully his heart ached, And he could do it all on cue. He’d say, "Whoa, how...did I get this way? When every day, every day, every day, I chose to stay.” He had his head shoved so far up his ass He could see his heart beat A pile of laundry in the basement so high that he Needed a Sherpa guide just to look at it It's the discipline of housework, The paying of the bills The taxi-ing of children And all the things that kill, And he said "How...did I get this way? When every day, every day, every day... I chose to stay."

The Devil Deals in Lies Words and Music by G.Hoskins A shadow crawls across the room Just as soon as you leave And the Devil takes his place at the loom And begins to weave. Back and forth the shuttle flies Burning images on my eyes It’s a good thing I know The Devil deals in lies Deals in lies.

Never A Stranger Kiss Words and Music by G.Hoskins Never a stranger kiss When you are spoken for Never a stranger kiss Leaving me wanting more I said the night is a dangerous thing You said the mornings are worse For there is no chance to reverse The consequences daylight will bring Never a stranger kiss When you are spoken for Never a stranger kiss Leaving me wanting more The heart is a beggar It wants what it wants With no regard for the rules That guide us and bind us, That are there to remind us, Of all one kiss can undo! Never a stranger kiss...

It’s Always Something Words and Music by G.Hoskins There’s something hot about young flesh There’s something cool about the clothes There’s something moving in my middle There’s something calling I should loathe There’s something ageless in young love There’s something burning in my breast There’s something freeing in our contract And stale beneath our breath. If it’s not one thing, then it’s another It’s always something. There’s something lonely in a crowd There’s something rich about the poor There’s something fleeting in the concrete There’s something locked about that door There’s something holy in the church There’s something selfish in my prayers There’s something cruel about your mercy And cluttering your stairs. If it’s not one thing, then it’s another It’s always something.

Illuminate Me Words and Music by G.Hoskins I lay down beside my religion, On the bed in the room at the top of stairs. Her skin is brown, she pulls me down with conviction… I don’t mind this kind of prayer Illuminate, Illuminate me. Somehow the sun breaks through the window… It betrays the room’s unfinished state. What is grotesque, what is gorgeous; All this, and everything in between, The light illuminates. Illuminate, Illuminate me.

about

Recorded in front of a sold out house, on Nov. 29, 2007, at The Glenn Gould Theater in Toronto, Canada, captured impeccably by CBC engineers, 100% live, no overdubs. The concert features The Beggars String Ensemble in 7 of the tracks, an 8-piece ensemble of Toronto's A-list players. A retrospective of songs written/recorded dating from 1994-2007, interpreted by Hoskins and an incredible band. A truly impressive live recording.
