The song began in a basement on the farm, on an old Mac computer that sat on a desk in front of a window that looked out on to the barn and the forest beyond it. It was night, of course, and the author looked like a ghost in the window.
lyrics
Every Day
Words and Music by G.Hoskins
The spirits moved his feet
To the music that they played
And they wouldn't let him hear it
And they wouldn't let him stray
From the path they set before him,
From the set list that they made;
It would confuse him if he knew it,
They could use him more this way.
And he said, How...did I get this way?
Well, the angels really loved him,
The devils loved him, too.
On a slow night he was lots of fun,
He wasn't Job but he would do.
And they loved how he was empty,
And the shapes he'd bend in to
And how beautifully his heart ached,
And he could do it all on cue.
He’d say, Whoa, how...did I get this way?
When every day, every day, every day,
I chose to stay.
He had his head shoved so far up his ass
He could see his heart beat.
And a pile of laundry in the basement
So high
That he needed
A Sherpa guide
Just to look at it.
It's the discipline of housework;
The paying of the bills;
The taxi-ing of children;
And all the things that kill.
And he said, How...did I get this way?
When every day, every day, every day...
I chose to stay.
